Mike Keneally has never achieved the level of recognition enjoyed by guitar equals Steve Vai or Joe Satriani, but his recordings are virtually worshipped by those who've known of him since his late-'80s tenure with Frank Zappa. Keneally is routinely praised not only for his profound technical abilities but for his diversity, breadth and-- Zappa again-- humor. hat. (1992) and the long-out-of-print Boil That Dust Speck ('94) are where the solo career began. Overreaching and ambitious but undeniably superlative, the albums established Keneally as an innovative and risky player and composer unafraid to veer wildly and continually challenge himself. These deluxe reissues give the two revered, if underexposed, albums the treatment acolytes will relish: Bonus DVDs feature session footage and such, and tunes previously cut to size are given back their original breathing room (hat.'s already epic "Lightning Roy," restored to its original, near-15-minute length, is a careening slab of post-prog mega-shredding). Newbies: prepare to be blown away.
